TheworldisinthemidstoftheFourthIndustrialRevolutionwhereAIisrevolutionizingindustrieseconomies,andsocieties.WiththeriseofgenerativeAIweseeatechnologythathascapturedglobalattentionduetoitsspeed,scale,andtransformativepotentialAIhasthepotentialtoaddresssomeoftheworld'smostpressingchallenges.

RecentresearchestimatesthatAIcouldaccelerateprogresstowardsnearly80%ofthesustainabledevelopmentgoals（SDGs）potentiallycontributinguptoUS$15.7trilliontotheglobaleconomyby2030.Itcandriveimprovementsinhealthcare,education,agricultureandenvironmentalsustainabilitydeliveringsolutionsthatbenefitsocietyonaglobalscale.ThatiswhyitiscriticalthatwecontinuetoembraceAIasatoolforgood.

Ladiesandgentlemen,duringmytimeinChinaIhavewitnessedfirsthandtheremarkablestridesthecountryhasmadeinAIandtheapplicationtosustainabledevelopment.Fromitsworld-leadinginfrastructureinfiberopticsandthe5GnetworkstothethrivingecosystemofAIbusinesses.ChinahasshownhowAIcanbetransformativeforce.TheseadvancementsarenotjustforChina'sbenefit.Theyhavethepotentialtocatalyzepositivechangeonaglobalscale.

However,wemustalsorecognizethechallengesthatcomewithAI

Whiletheopportunitiesarevastsotooaretherisks.AsAIcontinuestoevolvewemustensurethatitsdevelopmentanddeploymentareethicalinclusive,andresponsibleAIcouldexacerbateexistinginequalitiesifitsbenefitsarenotsharedequitablyacrossregionsandpopulations.InparticulartheGlobalSouthrisksbeingleftbehindduetothelackofresources,infrastructureandcapacitytofullyharnessAI'spotential.Wemustalsoaddressconcernsaroundjobdisplacementdataprivacy,andalgorithmicbiasesallofwhichrequireurgentaction.

TheUNhasbeenattheforefrontofthisdialogue.AstheSecretary-General,AntónioGuterressaidinShanghaiearlierthisyearwemustseizethishistoricopportunitytolaythefoundationsforinclusivegovernanceofAIforthebenefitofallofhumanity.Aheadofthisyear'sSummitoftheFuturetheUNinChinahostedaseriesofdialoguesherepriortothedeliberationsinNewYork.lookingtoinformtheprocessandbuildmomentumacrossallsectorsofsocietyinChinawiththerisksandopportunitiesposedbyAIandfrequentlyused.Atthesummitofthefuture,inSeptember2024worldleadersfinalizedtheGlobalDigitalCompactalandmarkagreementaimedatensuringasecureopen,andhuman-centereddigitalfuture.ThiscompactoutlinesessentialprinciplesfordigitalcooperationpromotingcollectiveeffortstoensureAIandothertechnologiesbenefitallpeoplenotjustaselectfew.

Additionally,ThePactfortheFuture,avisionaryblueprintaddressingkeyglobalchallengescallsforstrengthenedinternationalcooperationtobridgethedigitaldivideandensurethatAItechnologiesaredevelopedanddeployedequitablyalignedwiththecorevaluesoftheUN,the2030AgendaandtheSDGs.
